Default What is your Favourite Free Software

Share with us what your favourite FREE software is.

Not referring to freeware which comes with adware or extremely limited functionality or hacked (Pirated software). I mean fully functioning software that works as advertised and has no strings attached.

Some examples are as follows.

CD Burner XP Pro - CD/DVD burning software - I have release 3.16 and I believe there is a newer release - hopefully still free.

Audacity - audio editting, capturing and conversion software.

AVG - Free version for personal use - Virus protection software
- on going updates available as required

ZoneAlarm - Free Version - Personal firewall
- free updates as required

SpyBot Search and Destroy - Adware + detector and remover as well as additional realtime protection for the Registry.

DVD Shrink Ver 3.52 - free DVD ripping software. No longer supported but still available if you search the Net. Allows the removal of extras from DVD movies as well as compressing them to fit on one 4.7 gig blank DVD. Works great if you buy go between software such as "Slysoft" AnyDVD.

DVD Decrypt - Movie DVD ripper.

Webword - free internet based Dictionary - does work without the Internet.

Weather Eye - free from the Weatherchannel.com. Allows you to monitor weather for 1-3 Cities world wide.

MediaMonkey - free version very usable - purchase allows enhanced functionallity

Winamp - free version - I don't use it but I assume it still has a large following.

7Zip - free archiving software

Open Office Suite - from Openoffice.org - full office suite that can allow access to Micro Soft Documents for viewing and editing. Allows saving in multiple formats.

Word, Excel and Powerpoint Viewers - free from Microsoft. Allows one to open Micro Soft files for viewing only - no editing capabilities. Usually displays the data in the format intended by the originator.

Yes, DVD Shrink is old and no longer supported but if I throw up AnyDVD (1X paid subscription w/regular updates) in front of it DVD Shrink has no problem interfacing with any DVD movie so far. If ripping I start up AnyDVD first and let it run in the background. AnyDVD takes care of any issues with he DVD before I bring DVD Shrink into play. AnyDVD even takes care of the region codes virtually to satisfy the discrepancy between the hardware's firmware and the DVD's expectation, as I found out while in the UK this fall.

I prefer DVD Shrink's Interface and until the combo craps out altogether there is no need to drop it.

Before I purchased AnyDVD I would use DVD Decrypt followed by DVD Shrink. Two free apps. But this combo was starting to have problems dealing with newer movies. Plus it was a three step process. 1- rip, 2- compress, 3- verify result and burn.

Now with the combo of Shrink and AnyDVD it's 1-rip and compress, 2-verify and burn.

One point of interest. I drop the menu system and go for the movie only. Not all stand-alone players can deal with a Menu-less DVD. In general I have found that the cheaper the player the more types of CD's/DVD's it can deal with.

I was just about to add some neat Monitoring tools when I just realized that this site had 4 of the ones I use.

http://www.cpuid.com/index.php

Another great free tool is Mobilemeter. It monitors CPU Temp, HDD Tem, CPU Hz and battery charging + Battery Info. Here is the link. Don't worry there is a link to an english explanation.

CPUID is also a great way to ensure that your netbook is running at peak clock frequency.
