Yes, DVD Shrink is old and no longer supported but if I throw up AnyDVD (1X paid subscription w/regular updates) in front of it DVD Shrink has no problem interfacing with any DVD movie so far. If ripping I start up AnyDVD first and let it run in the background. AnyDVD takes care of any issues with he DVD before I bring DVD Shrink into play. AnyDVD even takes care of the region codes virtually to satisfy the discrepancy between the hardware's firmware and the DVD's expectation, as I found out while in the UK this fall.
I prefer DVD Shrink's Interface and until the combo craps out altogether there is no need to drop it.
Before I purchased AnyDVD I would use DVD Decrypt followed by DVD Shrink. Two free apps. But this combo was starting to have problems dealing with newer movies. Plus it was a three step process. 1- rip, 2- compress, 3- verify result and burn.
Now with the combo of Shrink and AnyDVD it's 1-rip and compress, 2-verify and burn.
One point of interest. I drop the menu system and go for the movie only. Not all stand-alone players can deal with a Menu-less DVD. In general I have found that the cheaper the player the more types of CD's/DVD's it can deal with.
